Good News or Bad?

believe there are new newspapers hitting the stands in Mumbai soon. one from the Old Lady's stable, other from her Delhi competitor and a third from a tv-print synergy group. there is movement in the profession, journalists are shifting jobs and allegiances, often for very high salaries. on the face of it, sounds like a good thing happening. but is there some underside to all this that we are missing out on? The flagship paper of the city had rolled out a second paper, much like they intend to do now, only to scare and later finish off the competition from The Post. History seems to repeat itself...

Women in Journalism

There has been an enormous amount of talk and written word on how the Op/Ed pages in America are largely devoid of women columnists. There was also a survey that showed that the situation on mainstream news television in the US is no better. I wonder if we are any better off in India? Is there a study of how many and how often women writers appear on the Op/Ed pages of mainstream Indian newspapers -- English and other languages? My guess is that our situation is no better than in the US. We may have more diversity but the story kind of ends there...
